Half-Blood Prince

I'll comment more lengthily when I've stopped reeling from it at a later time. I promise, no spoilers here, just vague stuff.

I decided not to speed read it, because I did that for both Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, and I didn't read either again for over a year. I made that choice because I didn't want to feel the pressure to read it first - and, hah, fat chance of that for living in California, one of the last time zones to receive the book. I'm glad I made that choice to read Half-Blood Prince with that in mind.

It's good, really good, until probably the last chapter, but god, I've just spent the last 16 hours reading, interspersed with several hours of sleep, and . . . it's just that good.

I'm disappointed that the spoiler I saw was correct, and that guy should burn in hell for being an asshole; however, it didn't do much to affect me, because I kept forgetting I'd seen that rumor and it made sense when it happened. I see what happened as a sign of something much larger, which as I said, to anyone who cares, I'll discuss later. I'm amused to reflect that I was sure I knew who the Half-Blood Prince was as I got into the book and was duly thwarted by my own thoughts and plot occurences, which thereafter I was kicked in the butt and turned out to be right in the first place. I'm also disappointed in certain characters' actions and certain characters' pairings (which seemed, at best, half-assed and not fleshed out), but again I'll talk about that later.

Oh, JKR, a mixture of love and frustration goes out to you, but thank you.

Please, to my non-American friends, stop bashing our country.

Our system is strong and powerful. It can screw the minority sometimes, but overall it works and is highly accomplished. I wish you'd stop saying so high and mightily, "I'm glad I'm not American!" or something of the sort.

Please, to my American friends, stop saying you're going to leave the country. Stop saying you give up, or that your voice didn't matter.

I have said flippantly too that our American system of government is skewed and that I want to move somewhere else, but I stress the flippantly part. Leaving the country won't solve anything. Giving up won't help either.

Liberals and progressives suffered an enormous loss today, and it hurts. Bush stands to take our society and mold it into a regressive, isolationist state, and damn it if he's not going to try to do that as soon as he can. But what you must realize is that to say you give up means nothing will ever be solved. We have to fight. We have to keep fighting to get rid of this conservative, fear-driven, anti-progressive, anti-civil rights campaign that is sweeping the country like mad.

To fight means staying here and staying active. Don't give up. Giving up on democracy, the Democratic party, liberalism, or activism is far worse than Bush being re-elected.

I met Jeff Bridges (of "The Dude" fame and the president in one of my favourite movies, The Contender) and Tony Kushner (playwright, Angels in America) on Friday night!

I love my school.

It's starting to get rainy here and it's beautiful weather. ::sighs happily:: Alas, I am sick, but as long as I make it to class I'll be fine.

The local theatre near my university is playing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on October 26 for $3 or so, so several of my friends and I are going to get a group of fellow HP fans to go with us and we're going to dress up. My pal Lexi is actually KNITTING me a SLYTHERIN scarf. It won't be as cool as hers, because I screwed up and bought a really dark gray as opposed to the lighter gray she used for her own scarf, but it's going to be so awesome.

You have no idea how many Potter slash fans, not to mention the yaoi/anime gurus, I've met here. It's craziness in a bottle. ::laughing::

Well, I'm behind in my reading and suffering from a cold, so I should get outta here. <3 to all of you!

KERRY: Well, again, the president just said, categorically, my opponent is against this, my opponent is against that. You know, it's just not that simple. No, I'm not.

I'm against the partial-birth abortion, but you've got to have an exception for the life of the mother and the health of the mother under the strictest test of bodily injury to the mother.

Secondly, with respect to parental notification, I'm not going to require a 16-or 17-year-old kid who's been raped by her father and who's pregnant to have to notify her father. So you got to have a judicial intervention. And because they didn't have a judicial intervention where she could go somewhere and get help, I voted against it. It's never quite as simple as the president wants you to believe.

Harry and the Potters

Harry and the Potters = SO MUCH FUN.

There was a huge lovely crowd shoved into a small meeting room off the side of the library, filled with little kids and about a dozen teenagers/young women, mixed in with a few young men. All there to see the band.

And they *ROCKED* the house!!

d00d, the "SPEW" song was the absolute greatest and they played very short, hilarious songs about rocking the library and being in the library.

Also, "The Human Hosepipe" played live is fantastical. The guys ("Harry Potter" and "Harry Potter") introduced the song by saying something along the lines of, "This is a song about our first date. See, we're getting to that age to date and so . . ."

::still laughing::

I now own autographed copies of both their CDs - Harry and the Potters, and Voldemort Will Not Stop the Rock! - and a cool blue T-shirt that reads "Rock the library!" And two pins!

And I saw mariannec there! Huzzah! (Where did you run off to??)

All and all, a rocking good time. The concert went on for a little over an hour, with an encore even after a FANTASTIC finale, and I made a right ass of myself in front of the guys. Oh well. I loved it. My friends thought I was nuts, but they had a really good time too.

*squee*

They are touring the country and are absolutely hilarious/riotous/awesome. They are two guys (sometimes three) who dress up in Hogwarts attire and sing about anything Harry Potter.

Let's all support them, shall we?

I may die happily from the sheer loveliness of this band. *beam*

I'm posting to hp_california and hp_socal to see if we can get a group together and go see them, either in Los Angeles or Isla Vista (up near UCSB), around mid July. They'll be in San Francisco soon too. Anyone want to join me?

Let's all be a little happy

<blink>YES, I WANT YOU TO READ THIS!</blink>

Excuse me, I'm not one to spoil a party, but I just needed to say something to all of you drama queens.

When you delete your journal in a tizzy of emotions, don't for ONE MINUTE even disguise the fact you KNOW it is going to attract attention.

There has been a lot of pretentious bullshit pulled during the last few years in the Harry Potter fandom, and this is possibly one of the most annoying.

What is it that I speak of?

Here it is, in a nutshell:

1.) Widely-known authors and/or fandom figures abruptly delete their journal.

2.) Widely-known friends and lesser-known wannabes freak out and send a barrage of E-mails to the dispersed. Is this person hurt, suicidal, dead? Said person mysteriously shows up on AIM or Y!M. Everyone asks "R U OK???/" but said person only talks to the *BEST FANDOM FRIEND*, who then assures everyone said person is okay and she (or, rarely, he) just "needs some time."

3.) Said person appears back a few days later, with a restored livejournal and a sunny disposition, apologizing for the emotion-driven reason to disappear.

4.) Fandom is "happy" once again.

::silence::

It's not about you being in an emotional state. It's about you needing attention. And deleting your journal or your website and cutting off all contact is going to get you that, isn't it? You know it will.

Anyone who does this is a self-serving, whiny little child. Don't try to give a reason you didn't know so many people cared. Ha! You were counting on it, dearie. Because if the bumbling-over-their-feet-to-please people who exist in this fandom only to make you happy did not care, then where would you be?

Nowhere and up a little creek with no paddles in the wide, wide web of the Internet, that's where. So sad for you, I guess, so you'd better hope you have at least 100 people on your friends' list who drool over your every word and absolutely need you to be there in their lives every day.

Save us all a little panic and just go away, if you just need a break. There's no reason to delete your journal. If you need to get away from the fandom, then DO IT and stop your bitching. It's tiresome and not worth anyone's time.

Getting up from your computer and leaving is not hard. Take a walk, go for a drive, swim or something. That is, if you're serious. But, if you're not serious about being emotionally strained by fandom, by all means just up and delete your journal and wait for the minions to come running. They're not far off! Go for the gold!

(If you can't tell, I don't think highly of these look-at-me practices.)

My friend chickadilly was talking about this phenomenon the other day and I'm sorry, Lea, but I just don't agree with you. For the most part, people - especially people from the 'fandom hierarchy' - who delete their journals abruptly and without warning are just trying to make sure everyone loves them and get people talking about them again. That I can guarantee. This happens all the time and I can't believe so many people are oblivious to this happy little cycle.

Honestly, get over yourselves and get a freaking life.

More on POA

Chronicling the ships of the POA movie:

Harry/everyone, of course! And everyone/everyone.

Let's back track here on the film. (fairly sexual, be warned)

1) Harry and himself. Not more details than that, but it's obvious.

2) Hermione oggles Harry in the Leaky Cauldron and bats her eyes. Ron looks jealous (but of who? who does he *really* want?).

3) Sirius is "hunting" Harry. Oooh, baby, gimme some of that animal magnatism . . . *cough*

4) Those dementors really seem to like Harry.

5) Harry year 3 Gryffindor boys: Ron, Seamus, Dean, Neville. In the dormitory. As my friend Michelle said, and she hasn't even read the books or fanfiction, "they're being all gay together." (She liked their thin pajamas...) Oh, and Ron acted all alpha-male with that manly roar.

6) Draco/Harry. Draco *challenges* Harry. Harry *struts* up to Draco. Draco *sizes up* Harry, looking him up and down in the hippogriff paddock. His eyes *linger.*

7) Hermione gets all huffy.

8) Hermione grabs Ron's hand. They get all nervous.

9) Hagrid/Buckbeak. Buckbeak got a talkin' to!

10) Remus and Harry's talk on the bridge. Can *totally* be taken out of context. Lest us not forget Remus also handing Harry candy all the time - could be construed as bribery. :D

11) The broomstick. C'mon. Total imagery.

12) Draco's paper crane note. He made it with such care and blew it over to Harry so sexily. *swoon*

13) Hermione sitting on the bed, very concerned with Harry after he wakes up from his fall at the quidditch match.

14) The "play with the big boys" comment Fred and George make to Harry in a quiet corridor, after having dragged him there.

15) Hermione and Ron at Christmastime, looking at the Shrieking Shack. SUCH a funny scene.

16) Harry/Draco. *hysterics* Where the heck was Harry dragging him?!

17) Harry fluffing Hermione's hair, Harry *booping* Ron's hat.

18) Snape and Harry's midnight rendezvous in the hall.

19) Remus joins them.

20) Remus then asks Harry back to his classroom. Alone. Snape gets huffy.

21) Hermione and Draco. d00d! Draco against the wall!

22) Hagrid says Dumbledore "wants to be with me."

23) The Ron/Hermione/Harry comforting scene. IF YOU DIDN'T LAUGH/GAPE OPENLY AT THAT OMG I SPURN YOU.

24) Ron was *supposed* to be on the bed in the shrieking shack.

25) Sirius acting very voyeur-ish.

26) Remus staring down at Sirius like "You just got served!" and looking very pleased about it.

27) The canon Remus and Sirius embrace (which I NEVER thought indicated a relationship in the book, but when you see two men doing it...)

28) Snape's "old married couple" comment.

29) Snape advancing on Sirius, Remus trying to touch Snape, Remus acting all defensive and useless and unhappy.

30) Alan Rickman is banished, spread-eagle, onto the bed. Unconscious.

31) Pettigrew lathering himself all over every person in the shack.

32) The Ron/Hermione conversation about his broken leg. *laughs*

33) The very FACT Ron says in the book to Pettigrew, "I let you sleep in my bed!" and that Cuaron and Kloves curiously took the line out of the screenplay.

34) Sirius and Harry going off together.

35) Hermione acting very odd by trying to "find" Remus. WTF?

36) Sirius yelling at Remus about "this heart" and charging after him.

37) Snape grabbing a hold of Hermione.

38) Snape yells, "Potter, get back here!" Damn. That was . . . nice.

39) More dementor sucking. If you catch my meaning.

40) Harry and Sirius laying beside each other.

41) Dumbledore's hand on Ron's leg.

42) Hermione acting very familiar with Harry when she smacks him.

43) Harry/Hermione having "the talk."

44) Harry talking about "living in the country" with Sirius like an old married couple.

45) Remus/Hermione; he was coming after that female wolf!

46) The hour of Hermione/Harry hand-holding and embracing.

47) SIRIUS/HARRY. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT . . .

48) Lastly, the new, shiny, super-fast broomstick. And Harry enjoying himself at the end.

Now don't comment and tell me I ruined the movie for you. You already know all that's there, you're just trying to deny it.

POA

Well. I saw Prisoner of Azkaban yesterday. Twice. Once at midnight in Universal City; the other, a 4:30 IMAX showing at my local theatre. And here’s what I think . . .

I can’t say I loved it, but I can’t say I hated it. There is much to be said about the script and the text that was taken directly from the novel, as well as many additional lines given to Harry, Hermione, Remus, and Dumbledore that spark questions without answers, truths with veils, and loneliness without boundaries, but there are certain parts that simply failed to catch my interest. Prisoner of Azkaban is extremely more compelling than the other two movies, though the story is even more remixed than Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets.

But, I can’t gather myself to be mad about that like I was about the first two movies because I absolutely loved Alfonso Cuaron’s directorial choices. My brain is frazzled by the dazzling cinematography and the imagery and the symbolism Cuaron grafted into the film. The movie is a veritable feast for the eye and the grittiness of the film is paradoxically beautiful. Cuaron is, simply, awesome in his use of water imagery as a liberator, destroyer, and creator; light and shadow to create emptiness and cryptic foreshadowing; and darkness as a permeating factor in the world.

The graphics, and the numerous re-workings of the set were superb. The grounds of the school, as well as the school itself, are so much more intricate and gorgeous – I especially love the clock in the school and the bridge connecting the castle to the grounds near Hagrid’s home. I was quite disappointed with the CGI of Sirius as Padfoot and Lupin as Moony, though. Why couldn’t they have used a real dog for Sirius? And Moony was just . . . well, I can’t explain it, but I can’t stand it either. Moony did not look “real.” The mechanical rat (Peter as Wormtail) was a joke; I don’t see why they didn’t use a real rat again at least for a majority of the scenes. The Whomping Willow, completely revamped to the way it should have been in the second Harry Potter film, rocked my socks!

On our favourite young actors, I am very impressed with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Matthew Lewis, and Tom Felton. They all have matured greatly in their acting. Daniel has the ability now to fully explore Harry's emotions, and the rest of these young people play off each other magically.

On the older actors, Michael Gambon is very good – an excellent choice to take over Richard Harris’ place in the Harry Potter film series. He plays Dumbledore with the right vibrancy and his lines in terms of magic, light, and dreams were expressed with great thoughtfulness. Alan Rickman, although with fewer lines than even the Chamber of Secrets movie I think, brought about Snape’s nastiness and mystery from the third book excellently; I love that man more every day. I was slightly disappointed with Robbie Coltrane’s performance of Hagrid, perhaps because he did not seem particularly upset on Buckbeak’s execution day and he was virtually left out of the film, much to my chagrin.

David Thewlis, it has been said, did not play Remus Lupin well. I agree and disagree. The problem with choosing Alan Rickman to play Snape is that, essentially, as much as I dearly adore and respect Rickman, the man is much older than the character is in the book. Thus, I suppose, the producers were compelled to select older actors to play Remus, Sirius, and Peter. David Thewlis seems to know the character, and he is comfortable with the role of Remus Lupin, but I just get the feeling he’s too old for the role and I cannot totally make myself relate with him as I do with the books, from a child’s perspective or an adult’s (for I am on the cusp of childhood and adulthood). It is the same for me with Gary Oldman playing Sirius Black and Timothy Spall as Peter Pettigrew. They are all wonderful men, but they don’t seem to connect well with the younger characters as well as they could have if younger actors for the Marauders had been selected to go along with the footing of the novel and reality of men in their mid-to-late thirties who have seen far too much in their lives. Also, Spall was not as sniveling as I perceive Peter to be and he was overtly comically grotesque way, which undermines Peter’s character.

But I will say this about Gary Oldman and David Thewlis: each approach their roles with a goal to say something real and endearing about the character as well as express the flaws, darkness, and retributions that make each one of us human. And that, one might say, is the essence of Harry Potter - to explore every aspect that makes us who we are and that places us on the path of what we are to become.
